1. Lectures

Week 8 (17/11/2023):

No Lecture: Independent Learning week.

Week 9 (21/11/2023):

Realism: Takes subject matters of the ordinary and common world which we call "reality." It almost always takes a non-exotic and non-extraordinary subject matter and theme. There is no need to think outside of the box, as that is not "real."

Surrealism: A twist on Realism. It explores the subconscious mind, with subject matters concentrating on dream-images and often aims to distort the ordinary and what we call reality. It is a cultural movement focused on type of arts to express about the artist’s idea themselves. In this digital era surrealism is one of the top digital art styles. Surrealism defies logic. Dreams and the workings of the subconscious mind inspire surrealistic art(French for "super-realism") filled with strange images.

Characteristics of Surrealism include:

-Dream-like scenes and symbolic images

-Unexpected, illogical juxtapositions

-Bizarre assemblages of ordinary objects

-Primitive or child-like designs

Week 10 (28/11/2023):

What is After Effects?

Adobe After Effects is a 2.5D animation software used for animation, visual effects, and motion picture compositing.

After Effects is used in film, TV, and web video creation.

This software is used in the post-production phase, and has hundreds of effects that can be used to manipulate imagery. This allows you to combine layers of video and images into the same scene.

Adobe After Effects takes a different approach for creating movement. Motion graphics animation works by manipulating vector and rasterized art to create and tell a story. You can integrate physical based media as well through photographs and videography.

Week 11 (5/12/2023):

Final Project Consultation.

2. Instructions & Tasks

Exercise: After Effects

Instructions

-Create a composition setting 1080 px (Width) x 1920 px (Height), Duration 15 second
-Create a keyframe animation to the layers using Position (P), Scale (S) & Masking path.
-Render output: Quicktime (.MOV) or .MP4
-Upload your exercise into your Youtube Channel.

This exercise was to introduce us to the interface of After Effects for our upcoming final projects. We covered the basic animations by changing the position, scale, speed, and other methods.

2. Write a summary about your idea:

Idea 1: “Sea Phones”;  a combination of seashells and earphones.

As kids, we always picked up seashells and put them next to our ears to hear the “sounds of the ocean”. These sounds we hear through the shells are actually air vibrations at frequencies due to the shell’s shape, creating the wave-like sounds. This idea is basically a metaphor for that experience.

Idea 2: “Brush Pen” a combination of a paint brush and an ink pen.

Brush pens are a type of ink pens that is shaped as a brush, but is not actually a brush. In this idea, I quite literally combine a normal ink pen and a traditional paint brush in one.

Idea 3: “Oven-case”; a combination of an oven and a suitcase. It’s an easily portable oven that can also carry storage for convenience.

Part 2: Mock Up Process (Week 10)

The first step was to separate the original image I took from the background by selection. I used the magic wand tool for the selection and then manually went over it to fix inaccuracies.

After I had both the images separated, I start combining the two images to form the concept, idea 3.

I cleaned the image using the healing tool, to make the product look more appealing.

I adjusted the colors, hues, brightness, and contrast of both the images to match each other. I also added an off white background with a reflective surface. The reflection was made by the same steps in the previous Heart Mansion Assignment; by copying the main layers, flipping it vertically, blurring it, and reducing opacity.

Final Artwork:

"Ovencase"; A combination of an oven and a suitcase. It is an easily portable oven that can also carry storage for convenience. Perfect for those who cook and move frequently!

3. Reflections

Experience

I learned a lot more about photoshop and gained more skills as I have been practicing more frequently. I found plenty of the exercises very enjoyable since they were pretty open for us to decide what to do depending on our liking.

Observations

In the second project, Conceptual Product Photoshoot, we had to look through products we own ourselves and in our daily lives. During that process, I observed a lot of my personal things visually, and I inspected the shapes, colors, and textures of them to see what can work out together. I feel like this was a nice visual exercise, and can be applied to a lot of things in the future.

Findings

I found a lot of creative ways to combine images through Project 2B, it introduced to me many ways to manipulate images. This was also my first time using After Effects, so I am looking forward to using it for upcoming projects and personal use, too.
