Project 2A: Production Shoot

In this task, we were instructed to reenact different scenes from the movie "Everything, everywhere all at once". We were asked to practice different types of shooting angles and methods using the professional equipment from the university's studio.

We were divided into groups and each of us were given a role; my role was the director. I ensured everything goes smoothly and that all the final takes were good.

Here is the behind the scenes images from our trial run at shooting the scenes. I was directing alongside the assistant director and camera crew as we were shooting the actors.

We managed to shoot and get a good take with not more than 10 takes, so we managed to finish earlier than expected. After we finished shooting, we exported all the final takes in google drive.

After importing all the footage to adobe premier, I edited the shots and cut them to my desired length, and I start compiling the shots together.

I sped up the first scene and then stabilized it using the warp stabilizer under effects.

After I'm done cutting out the footage, I do the same with the audio files and then place them down on the timeline with their respective scenes while making sure the timing is matched.

After I've finished cutting and editing the footage, I color graded the first scene then used it as a reference for the other scenes. I played with the colors: blues, greens, and saturation. I also increased the contrast; made the whites lighter and the blacks darker.

After I was done with the color grading, I edit it some more using Microsoft clip champ because I wanted to add the text animations in between the shots, and I added thriller action music.

I edited the scenes as a thriller movie trailer with intense music to add a bit of action and creativity, because if it were just a compilation of the scenes it wouldn't have been interesting.

Project 2B: Tiktok/ Instagram Video

In this project, we are tasked to make a tiktok or instagram video by following an existing trend and adding our own creative twist to it with exploring different framing and angle shots.

Storyboard

I roughly drew my storyboard to visualize the direction of the one minute video I will be making.
I wanted this video to be sort of a short film; it's a short monologue about my perspective on art and the creation of it. I wrote down the script on my journal and included it in the story board to know which line correlates to which scene.

Video Editing

Because the subject of the video is about painting, I recorded the video in my room with my painting set up. I have an empty corner with a white background that was suitable to record in. Below, is all the compiled footage used for the video in google drive.

I imported the scenes onto Microsoft Clipchamp and started editing, arranging, and cutting the videos to my liking. I had to cut out alot from the videos because I was trying to keep it engaging and all under 1 minute.

I wanted a mysterious whimsical feeling to the video, so I color graded the scenes accordingly. I increased the contrast and lowered the temperature so it would feel colder, and added a glow effect for the dreamy aesthetic.

I recorded the narration separately on my phone which I imported later to the video. Then, using Clipchamp's auto generated captions, I made subtitles for the narration. But since the auto generation is not 100% accurate, I revised the modified the words to be 100% accurate and in sync with the audio.

I added a faint background music, which is Bjork's song Unravel instrumental. It added more eeriness to the video.

Below was my first attempt at the tiktok video. But after receiving feedback from the lecturer, I made a lot of changes.

I unfortunately did not document the process of my changes all that well considering I made a lot of changes.

In my previous attempt, the lecturer noted that the pace was very slow, and that there was not much engagement to the viewer to keep watching the video due to how still some of the shots were. So I reshot some scenes and added them in. I included more dynamic angles and more shots so that the viewer would not get bored.

Additionally, I changed the color grading from extremely blue to a more balanced color palette. Previously it was really bright and blue, which certainly does have the dreamlike aesthetic but it was excessive, so I toned it down. Below is my second attempt.

3. Reflections

In the first half of this project, we were tasked to reshoot some scenes from the movie "Everything Everywhere All at Once". I especially loved working on this project because we actually had the opportunity to simulate what film production is like by working together as a team. Although we each had separate tasks, we all worked together to achieve the best results and teamwork. It gave me a better, more realistic perspective on how the production process is like.

In the second half of this project, I worked individually on a short personal film that was really fun to make. I chose this specific topic because it is personal to me, and I loved the artistic and creative freedom that we were given for this project.

Initially, the complete freedom paralyzed me; I had no idea what to do because I was overthinking it. But then I decided to do something I enjoy: painting! So I loved adding in my personal interests in this project, it made the process much more fun and passionate.
