2. Reflections
Experience
My initial experience with this module was a struggle to say the least, my creativity was rusty and so was my discipline. Once we've been handed tasks to do weekly, I've regained my work flow and started managing my time well. I put more effort into learning the designing basics and a lot more skills because of this module that I am confident in applying in my future projects. And I especially enjoyed the fact that in Advanced Typography, contrary to Typography, it allowed us some sort of freedom to work on things we enjoy working on, and have a big role on our personal taste.
Observations
I've noticed a lot of my struggles stemmed from not looking at the bigger picture and composition. It was often that I make the mistake of not considering the negative space in my designs, which is probably my weakest area. I'm more detail oriented, so it took quite a while for the design principles to fully kick in my creative flow despite taking it a while ago. I'd say I have a better understanding of it now than before. For some reason, I was always against the theory of art, however the basic understanding of design principles is crucial and very beneficial to make good design because, unlike art, you must follow rules to some extent.
Findings
Because of my first-hand experience of the constant effort that is needed to make a good design, I know understand the level of responsibility designers have. Growing up, I've always heard the underestimation of creative fields and design, even I, at one point, parroted the same things. I was hesitant on going to a creative field due to the stigma surrounding it, but after stepping my foot in the water, I know now that it is not simple work, nor is it redundant. Design is essential in every field of work; it is crucial for communication that breaks language barriers and connects us all.
While typography and graphic design are not what I chose to take creative media for, it is certainly an important subject I needed to take. I built strong fundamentals because of it, and it will definitely not be lost.
